If your are new blogger and want to promote your blog and increase your traffic I suggest you follow 5 tips that is very effective.If you are new to the blogger scene it is sometimes difficult to know where to go or how to go about promoting your blog. 1.Signature Promotion: To promote your blog add your Blog URL to the signature section of your forum profiles- so that it shows every time you post- or you can even add it as a signature in your emails.
2.Sign up with Blog Directories, Topsites and bookmarking sites then submit your blog to each of them (sites such as blogarama, bloggeries, blogapedia, technorati, Furl, del.icio.us etc) This is an extremely important step in website promotion and website traffic.
3.Submit your url to search engines (i.e. Google, Yahoo) to help promote your blog and drive traffic to your blog.
4.Another important step for a blogger is Ping-ing your blog regularly after new additions or updates have been made. (pingomatic, Pingoat, scrubtheweb)
This will alert sites that your url submission has been updated.
5.Keywords and Content - If your content is less than quality -fix it - if possible before you submit the url to directories or do any search engine submission! You will find these days that a lot of blog directories and other traffic boosting sites will refuse poor quality sites. Also, make sure you are using the proper site related keywords. Check out the Google Adwords Keyword Tool (link below) for good ideas of what keywords and keyword phrases people are searching for now.

I think most beginners forget to pick a good keyword.
unique daily content is key to generating traffic, but you will have to write good content for about 6 months, before traffic starts increasing. Links obviously help a lot.

Your tips cover almost all important sources of traffic generation. Personally my blog get about 500+ visitors from search engines mainly Google and Yahoo. But as regard the blog directories, my traffic is almost zero from them. Never got even a single visitor from blogarama and bloggeries.

If you are new to blogging, it is quite possible that you are not so much familiar of this profession. The success of your blog obviously depends on the niche, you have chosen.
